A Welsh-language version of this page is being prepared during the Tuesday tutor session (week of 2026-05-19). Until then, the Welsh-language version of the site shows the placeholder.

For commercial use

Awen Weave is dual-licensed. Most organisations using it for community or open work choose the AGPLv3 path; organisations needing proprietary terms choose the commercial license.

When you need the commercial license

The AGPLv3 license is sufficient for most uses. You need a commercial license if any of the following are true:

  • You want to use Awen Weave in a proprietary system where keeping your modifications and derivative work private is a requirement.
  • You are subject to procurement, regulatory, or contractual constraints that exclude AGPL-licensed software (common in Tier 1 construction, regulated infrastructure, and some enterprise IT environments).
  • You want indemnity, formal support agreements, service-level commitments, or warranties that the AGPLv3 does not provide.
  • You want to embed Awen Weave in a commercial product where AGPL's network-use clause would require publishing the surrounding system.

If none of these apply, the AGPLv3 path is open to you under the For Developers terms — no agreement with Awen Weave Limited needed.

What the commercial license grants

A commercial license is a private agreement between your organisation and Awen Weave Limited. Typical terms include:

  • Proprietary use rights — use and modify Awen Weave without the AGPL copyleft obligations applying to your modifications or derivative work.
  • Support and maintenance — commitments around version upgrades, security patches, and response times for issues.
  • Indemnity — warranty that the framework code is owned and licensable by Awen Weave Limited, with indemnity against third-party IP claims on the framework itself.
  • Service-level commitments — uptime and incident-response terms where Awen Weave Limited is operating components on your behalf (where applicable).

Exact terms are negotiated per agreement, shaped by your use case, deployment context, and operational requirements.

What the commercial license does not grant

For clarity:

  • It does not grant rights over content in your instance. Whatever data you put into your Awen Weave instance remains yours; the commercial license covers the framework, not your content.
  • It does not grant exclusivity. Awen Weave Limited retains the right to license the framework to other organisations under the same or different terms.
  • It does not grant trademark rights. The "AWEN WEAVE" name and any associated marks remain trademarks of Awen Weave Limited; commercial licensees use the framework but do not use the framework's brand to identify their own derivative products.

Who Awen Weave Limited is

Awen Weave Limited is a UK private limited company, in formation as of May 2026. The company exists specifically to hold the framework IP, grant commercial licenses, and provide support to commercial licensees.

The separation between Awen Weave Limited (the framework IP holder) and the operating community of each Awen Weave instance is structural — the company has no claim on the content of any instance.

How to start a commercial conversation

Get in touch:

  • Email: huw@awenweave.com
  • Subject: Awen Weave commercial license enquiry

Useful information to include in a first message:

  • Your organisation and your role
  • The nature of the intended deployment (community-facing, internal, product-embedded, etc.)
  • The scale (one instance, multiple, internal-only, public-facing, etc.)
  • The reason AGPLv3 is not the right fit for your context
  • Any timing constraints

Initial conversation typically takes one 30-45 minute call to understand the use case; subsequent steps depend on what's needed.

Pricing

Commercial license pricing is set per agreement, based on deployment context (scale, internal-or-external, support requirements). There is no published price list at this stage. Initial enquiries are free; a proposal is provided after the first conversation has established the shape of the deployment.

Pattern, not product

A reminder of the boundary: Awen Weave is licensed as a pattern — the framework code, the conceptual articulation, the constitutional principles. Awen Weave Limited does not operate instances on behalf of licensees. Each commercial licensee operates their own instance(s), configures them for their domain, and curates their own content. The commercial license is for the framework that enables the work, not for the work itself.

If you're looking for a managed-service deployment of Awen Weave — where Awen Weave Limited operates the instance for you — that is a separate conversation. The default commercial license is self-operated.
